I am a location independent solopreneur. That means, I run a single person business that can be operated from anywhere in the world. Read on to learn how I got here.
My Story So Far
As I was growing up, I always said to myself that I didn’t want to follow the generic, pre-planned conveyor belt and end up trapped in the rat race of a 9-5 office job. Before I could blink, I was deep into my second year of University, and that’s when it hit me. I was heading down that exact path. I had chosen a degree that I thought would ‘pay well’ only to realise that I was not doing this for me. I envisioned long, depressing commutes and soul sucking days spent building someone else’s dreams. I couldn’t live with the regret of accepting that future.
So I took a step back and re-evaluated what I was doing. I decided that I would teach myself a digital skill that I could build for the future and eventually develop into a business that requires nothing more than a laptop and an internet connection.
I taught myself everything I could learn from web development and graphic design to social media marketing and Google ads. I then left University and took a job as a marketing manager to get some experience in the industry.
Sharpening The Axe
I spent the next few years working a 40 hour work week. But I was okay with that because I knew that every single day, I was developing valuable skills in digital marketing.
Abraham Lincoln once said, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”
This is how I interpret this period of my life. It was an essential time that took patience. I believe that investing time into building up a solid skillset really takes the pressure off when jumping into the digital nomad lifestyle.
After I grew in confidence and felt competent enough to take my services public, I decided it was time to set up my own digital marketing agency.
I then built up clients over a period of time until I was happy with the level of monthly income I was making online. It was at this point, during the midst of the global COVID-19 crisis, that the scale tipped and I quit my job to pursue the location independent lifestyle for good.
Where Am I Now?
I now spend my days working on my digital marketing agency doing work that I love whilst having the ability to travel anywhere in the world. I feel immense gratitude to be in this position and can’t wait to see where it takes me.
This lifestyle is still very new to me. I have a lot to learn. I am now documenting my journey as I progress and sharing what I learn with other like minded people who may be inspired to follow a similar path.
